The Best Checkup

I've posted about taking Caleb to the doctor a few times {here and here}, so I won't explain all of the preparation and planning that goes in to every doctor visit {no matter how small}. And let me tell you, there are many.

With his upcoming oral surgery, {to take care of a few dental needs}, he needed to have a pre-op physical by our pediatrician. I told him he was going to the doctor for a checkup and no shots just the day before.

Let me tell you just how much Caleb has grown. We used to tell him about the doctor as we were walking out the door...while he was white knuckling the doorframe, kicking and screaming. We used to never be able to get height and weight {TJ would step on, then step on with him and they'd subtract the difference}. I used to have to hold him the entire time, bouncing, swaying, singing in his ear. He would scream at the stethoscope, the tongue depressor, the thermometer...and those aren't even the shots. Last year we had an incredibly great visit with our wonderful pediatrician who gets it. She was patient, quiet, calm.

This time was not unlike last year; it went very well. But yesterday was the very first time he didn't cry, not one tear. He stood for height and weight without an issue. And when we went back into the exam room, I sat in a chair while he handled the whole thing COMPLETELY on his own. I didn't have to hold him down while the doc looked in his ears, or when he was touched with the cold stethoscope, or even when they checked his blood pressure. He sat up, layed down, said AAAAAH, all while I stayed in my seat. I wanted to cry; all I could say was "Good job, Bug, you're doing great, way to go."

It's interesting though. He was able to communicate that he was nervous and still took it all in stride. Just for fun, here's a little video of him waiting for the doc. Usually when he's nervous he rambles on and on, trying to make sense of everything, trying to share bits and pieces that are in his head, his mind overloaded with thoughts. I guess it's probably what it's like for him every day. I'm just grateful that he feels he can share these things with me {even if the highlight is simply going to Denny's}.
