Assessments

Oh blogging...where have you been?  What could I have been doing that has completely consumed me and has allowed this blog to go untouched for so long. Oh wait now I remember...potty training.  Need I say more?  Clearly the hardest thing I've attempted to accomplish  <---I mean, it felt like that the first 3 days.  Getting better, not totally there yet, but we're on the right track!

We're also getting on track for Caleb's first IEP (*sigh* after working in the special ed field, and having my dad teach in it for the last 15+ years, it's so surreal to talk about an IEP for one of my own - but that's for an entirely different blog entry).  Caleb has had 3 evaluations so far with the Psychologist, the Speech Therapist, and the Occupational Therapist (he aslo gets to see the school nurse for vitals on Monday).  Each professional seemed to be very impressed with his writing, his memory, his gentle nature and sweet disposition, (OT said he most likely won't qualify for services *yay*), but they all said he was lacking with his social speech and his social interaction, which we're not surprised by.  I won't have their complete findings until the IEP where everything is spelled out and recommendations are made.  It'll be nice to get him started with services soon.

Caleb can be incredibly nervous in new situations, and I couldn't have been more proud of him throught the process thus far.  He simply held my hand and walked in to each of his appointments, not needing to be carried, not trembling or glomming onto me like before (could he simply be maturing?).  At speech he let the pathologist lean in very close to him, not shuttering at her voice, and he performed each task to the best of his ability, surprising me with a few things he was able to do.  At OT he jumped on the trampoline, ran through the obstacle course, went through the tunnel, walked across the balance beam, and allowed the therapist to instruct him.  And finally at psych he played with some bongos (his favorite), completed some puzzles, did some writing, and impressed them with his reading skills and his intentional eye contact when prompted.  Psych was the longest evaluation and the one he was the most restless in, but he was able to stay on task with small breaks inbetween.

So much more is yet to come, but I can hardly express how blessed I am to call him mine, and how blessed Tj and I are to have such loving and supportive family around us.  God is good.
